Stainless Steel 317 / 317L Sheets & Plates are manufactured from an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel alloy with increased molybdenum content, along with controlled amounts of carbon, manganese, silicon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and other alloying elements. This carefully balanced composition provides a strong combination of corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, toughness, and dependable performance in aggressive service environments. The chromium content helps form a protective passive layer that provides resistance to oxidation and general corrosion, while nickel contributes to the alloy’s ductility, toughness, and structural stability. The higher molybdenum content gives 317 / 317L improved resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and localized chemical attack, particularly when exposed to chlorides, acidic solutions, and other corrosive process media.
